Before you start

Four things that decide whether a job goes well or ends at the hospital. They cost nothing to read.

A jack lifts. It does not hold.

A jack lifts. It does not hold.

A trolley jack is a lifting tool, not a support: its seal can give way while you are underneath. Always put axle stands under the manufacturer’s lifting points and lower the car onto them before anything else goes under the car.

Rule of thumb: the stands carry the weight, the jack only carries your confidence.

Torque is a number, not an arm

Torque is a number, not an arm

Wheel bolts have a figure written by the manufacturer, usually between 90 and 140 Nm. Under it the wheel works loose; over it you stretch the stud and it snaps on the motorway.

A click wrench is set, used until it clicks once, then wound back to zero before it goes in the drawer: left under load, the spring loses its calibration in a few months.

The charger is not a jump pack

The charger is not a jump pack

A smart charger gives back a flat battery in hours and keeps it healthy. A jump pack gets you home. They are two different tools and swapping them ruins one of the two.

On a car with a start-stop system the battery is AGM or EFB: a charger without that setting overcharges it, and the battery lasts one winter instead of five.

A fault code is a symptom, not a diagnosis

A fault code is a symptom, not a diagnosis

P0420 does not mean «change the catalytic converter»: it means the second oxygen sensor is reading what the first one reads. Nine times out of ten the fault is the sensor, a leak in the exhaust, or a misfire upstream.

A reader that shows live data is worth three times one that only prints the code.

Find a workshop near you

Some jobs need a lift and two hands more than yours. This is where to look when the tool is not the problem.

Where to go next

How we earn. When you buy from a shop we showed you, that shop pays us a share of the sale. You pay the same price. We never change the order of the list for money: the cheapest one we found is always first.

Questions

Do I need a torque wrench, really?

For wheels, yes. It is the one job where a wrong number is dangerous and free to get right. For everything else it depends on what you take apart.

What size jack for my car?

Look up the kerb weight and take at least half of it, then add a margin: a 1.5 tonne jack is enough for most cars, 3 tonnes for vans and pick-ups. Height matters more than capacity on a lowered car.

Will any OBD reader work on my car?

Any car sold in Europe since 2001 (petrol) or 2004 (diesel) has the same socket and the same basic codes. What changes is the manufacturer-specific part: that is where cheap readers stop.

Are these prices the final price?

They are the price the shop is asking today, read from its own catalogue last night. Delivery, duty and import VAT are added by the shop at checkout.

Do you sell these tools?

No. We compare what the shops are asking and send you to the one that delivers in your country. If you buy, that shop pays us a share: it costs you nothing more.

Prices read from the shops’ catalogues on 10/10/2026. Delivery, duty and import VAT are added by the shop at checkout.
